But Saurav didn't score 15,000 runs in the lawns of Dalmiya's 10, Alipur Road residence: Debashish Datta
A strange country, strage things!
You can't call a crook a crook. You must cover a criminal with the white rob (of innocence). Saurav Ganguly himself thinks that he is out of the Indian squad at this moment due to Jagmohan Dalmiya. But his followers are telling -- how could Saurav forget Dalmiya's co-operation! No, Saurav didn't forget Dalmiya. Through his brief e-mail statement, he has informed the general public that one of the reasons of his being out of the Indian team is the non-cooperation of Dalmiya. If a cricketer exposes the reasons of his ouster ten there is strong doubt about is being back in the team, why is that eing termed as unjust? It is being said that without Dalmiya, Saurav could never have been 'Saurav Ganguly' we know. Is it so? What is your opinion, dear reader? For those who hold this opinion (the opinion of the Bengal sports minister Subhash Chakraborty), let me remind that Saurav didn't score fifteen thousand plus runs in the lawn of 10 Alipur Road or in the petty fields adjoining to Dalmiya's Eden, with the coperations of Dalmiya's favourite umpires and bowlers. What (Dalmiya) did falls well within the duties of the cricket association chiefs. For Sachin Tendulkar or Rahul Dravid, the Ratnankar Shetties of Mumbai cricket association or the Brijesh Patels of Karnataka cricket association often extend invisible helping hands. Even for the return of Dinesh Mongia, there is the invisible hand of Inderjit Singh Bindra. But you won't hear any criticism for that in Punjab cricket circle. This is just natural, isn't it? Against the (dark) act of Dalmiya, Saurav has just reacted. He was dropped during Dalmiya's time: wouldn't he remind people of that?
We believe firmly and are therefore trying to continuously make it a point over the years that the powers-that-be can terminate the career of any sportsman at their will. The sportsmen are thus used silently in their conspiracy drama. Saurav and his family don't want to remind us that during his tenure, Dalmiya had called Saurav from India or abroad with the request for arranging vote. Nor is Saurav reminding that Dalmiya had overruled his repeated requests for not contesting against ICC. It doesn't need a Newton to deduce that Dalmiya had used Saurav as a pawn in his fight against ICC, so that once he is out of power in Indian board, he can still pull his weight through the bodies like ACC, Afro-Asian association etc. It was a give-and-take and had the Dalmiya admirers realised this, the atmosphere would not have been so heated up. It is being whispered in the localities that Dalmiya had killed Saurav, the cricketer in cold blood for saving his 'gaddi'. Now the onus is on Dalmiya only to prove that he is not the murderer.
A couple of months back, I heard Jagmohan Dalmiya telling the interviwer Suman Chatterjee in a Kolkata TV channel, "I will leave CAB, if I hear that Saurav is contesting." We laughed and he didn't (leave). He knows well that if he leaves the post of CAB, he will be bankrupt. Saurav can return to Indian team by playing county cricket, what will Dalmiya do? Saurav is not candidate now. But I can foresee in near future, his name plate will decorate the entrance of the CAB president's room. It's only a matter of time.
This time, too, Dalmiyaji wants to win. He wants to remove his stigma by using the post of CAB president. Will he succeed? He is trying at least. For that, he made the big shots like Jyoti Basu to Subhash Chakraborty, Kshiti Goswami (left front minister) and Siddhartha Sankar Roy (Ex C.M. and barrister) issue statements. Even the Trinamul supremo was not left out. And I heard a fantastic story (read, true incident). After the leakage of Greg Chappell's email, Dalmiya had met Siddhartha Shankar Roy at the later's residence. After scanning the email, the seasoned lawyer had told Saurav, "You may sue both Dalmiya and Greg. There is enough material for that."
Startled, Dalmia asked, "But why me?" That same Siddharthababu is with Dalmiya at the moment. When I reminded him of that this sunday morning, he said, "That comment was in the capacity of a lawyer. Now the situation is different. And such things may not be discussed over telephone." It may be discussed, or may not -- at least not in the moment of discomfort. We only are witnessing the mask of Siddharthababu falling off his face. And for that we are not once going to call him a traitor, because he, like most of the Dalmiya followers, are like this only: they silently take more and give less. And then blow their trumpet on what little they give.
